Missing 2012

I just finished watching the pilot and I’m hooked. I can’t wait for next Thursday! When I saw the preview for this show staring Ashley Judd I was wondering if the economy was effecting Hollywood too. We seem to be seeing many A list actors on TV lately. Then, I saw her name in the beginning credits as an executive producer, so maybe that’s it.

The show starts us out with Judd’s character Rebecca jogging fiercely through the woods. She finishes this run and takes a call from her husband and son that are in Italy. Moments later her husband is killed in a car bomb and the young son who is approximately eight years old is spared. We are then forwarded ten years to Rebecca jogging with her son Michael on the same trail. At the end of the run he explains that he applied to an architecture school in Rome and was accepted. We are forwarded again to the airport where they say their goodbye’s but not before Michael explains a special text message that he will send his mother that means he loves her. That turns out to be a significant piece of info to anyone who loves action/suspense movies as much as I do.

We then see that Rebecca works in a floral shop and gets regular texts and calls from Michael until one day all communication stops. Rebecca becomes very worried a few days later and receives a call from Micheal’s University that he has missed several classes. Rebecca flies to Rome and using the pictures that Michael has sent her finds his apartment. It appears as if something has gone terribly wrong. Within moments a man with a gun comes into the apartment and that is when we the audience realizes that Rebecca is not your average PTO Mom. All of this happens in the first fifteen minutes of the episode! I was sitting on my couch holding my knees up to my face with my mouth open in shock at how many action scenes are in this one pilot episode.

We follow Rebecca into France where CIA big boss Agent Dax Miller played by Cliff Curtis tries to get her to go home. We learn from Miller that Rebecca is a retired CIA agent and that her husband played by Sean Bean was killed by terrorists. Let’s just stop a quick second. You should recognize both of these men. Cliff Curtis was the hot shot FBI guy in the last Die Hard movie; Live Free or Die Harder. Sean Bean was in all of the Lord of the Ring movies as well as the bad guy in James Bond’s Golden Eye. Excellent choice on both of these actors. I’m already suspicious if Bean’s character (Rebecca’s husband) will actually stay dead or should I say, did he die in the first place? I also see Agent Miller playing a major roll in this show and his character liking Rebecca and wanting to help her more than catch her, which he’s been ordered to do.

At this point the higher ups in the CIA have ordered Miller to catch Rebecca. That is far from what’s on her agenda. The pilot ends with Rebecca walking over a bridge in Paris looking at pictures she just found of Michael. There are gun shots and she falls over the side of the bridge and lands in the water. I won’t spoil the rest of the episode because you really should check it out but I can tell that this is one woman who will stop at nothing to rescue her son. This one is getting added to the TiVo cue as well. So far it’s on Thursdays at 8pm on ABC. According to Wikipedia it’s a mid-season show and is scheduled to have ten episodes.

This Means War 2012

My first impression was that this movie was going to be all looks and no follow through. Actually my first impression was… I hope they take their shirts off! This movie surprised me with more than just pretty faces and a few laughs. It had me laughing and had great action scenes.

Reese Witherspoon unknowingly begins to date two best friends played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. The spin is that the best friends are also CIA agents who have recently been sidelined and are clearly bored because of it.Tuck played by Tom Hardy is a sweet British guy that has been divorced and has a son. He puts himself on a dating website and gets matched with Lauren played by Witherspoon. Lauren’s profile gets posted by her quirky friend Trish played by Chelsea Handler. FRD played by Chris Pine meets Lauren shortly after and is intrigued by her insight fulness at his player mentality. What guy actually likes being called a player? So FDR does what any guy would do, he forces Lauren into a date to prove her wrong. FDR comes off pretty shallow in the beginning but gets deeper as the movie gets going.

Clearly out of force of habit both Tuck and FDR begin bugging Lauren’s apartment and doing background checks, you never know what kind of psycho you might meet on the internet. Like these guys couldn’t protect themselves from four foot nothing Witherspoon! Then, they realize that they are dating the same woman. The rest of the movie is a ton of laughs as the two try and sabotage each others dates and learn as much as possible about Lauren to boost their chances.

One of my favorite scenes is when Lauren is in her kitchen making popcorn and listening to an old school rap song; This Is How We Do It by Montell Jordan. She was blasting the music and singing along in her sweatshirt completely oblivious to the fact that both men have broken into her apartment to place bugs.

I should also mention the paintball scene because its hilarious! After Tuck listens to girl talk about himself being a little sensitive he decides to man up and show Lauren how tough he is by taking her to play paintball. He proceeds to clean house wiping out everyone on the field with his crazy spy ninja moves in a matter of minutes. No one is safe, including the children hiding in the fort! Lauren was stunned but impressed. One point for Tuck. Then minus one point after she shot him in the junk.

I need to mention Chelsea Handler. I’m a fan. I’ve read all of her books and watched her show on and off for years (it’s on a little late for me) but her acting/character left me shaking my head. Her acting seemed a little forced and to much like she is on her show. Her character was a little ridiculous.

Overall, I thought this movie was the perfect mix. I was kept guessing the entire movie who Lauren was going to end up with. Just when I thought one deserved her more I learned something about the other guy that made me second guess myself. I highly recommend this movie for “date night”. The action, comedy and romance are perfectly intertwined.

Have you seen it?
